ARTIST STATEMENT

JAY ANTHONY GONZALES -

My work explores the harmony between craftsmanship and expression through handcrafted wooden bags and paintings. I am drawn to the quiet beauty found in both functional objects and visual narratives, transforming everyday materials into pieces that carry meaning, texture, and presence.

Through my wooden bags, I merge utility with artistry—each piece carefully shaped, assembled, and finished by hand. These works challenge the boundary between fashion and sculpture, inviting viewers to see accessories not just as objects of use, but as extensions of identity and creativity.

In my paintings, I explore emotion, memory, and the rhythms of life through color, movement, and form. Inspired by nature, human connection, and everyday experiences, my compositions aim to evoke reflection while embracing abstraction and spontaneity.

Both my crafted pieces and paintings are guided by a process of patience, experimentation, and intuition. I value the imperfections that arise in handmade work, as they reflect authenticity and the human touch.

Ultimately, my practice is about connection—between material and maker, object and user, image and viewer. I hope my work encourages a deeper appreciation for the handmade, and invites others to find beauty in both function and feeling.
